Sound notes / GUIDE 06
Start with the M4. Listen beyond the loud part.
A focused guide to the free M4 profile, with a repeatable listening session and honest GPS limits.
The BMW M4 profile is free in Drive Tone. It uses RPM-based recordings with separate acceleration and coast playback, driven by a virtual transmission. It is an independent sound simulation, not access to a Tesla’s real accelerator or gear telemetry.
What this profile represents
The M4 selection is built around a turbocharged inline-six sound reference. Drive Tone changes the recordings’ playback and blends acceleration and coast material as virtual RPM and load change. The aim is a connected engine character, rather than a fixed acceleration clip that repeats regardless of what the app’s model is doing.
The current profile uses a virtual eight-speed automatic configuration. Those ratios and shift timings are sound-design approximations. They are not a certified factory calibration, and the profile is not endorsed by BMW or Tesla.
It is one of the three free profiles, alongside Ferrari 458 Italia and Audi R8 V10 Plus. You can listen without committing to Premium, which is especially useful when checking a vehicle browser for the first time.
Make the first comparison in the cabin perspective
While parked, open Drive Tone, select BMW M4 under Vehicle & sound settings and press Start Engine. Use Test Mode and start with Cockpit listening position at a low, comfortable media level.
Listen to the relationship between the low engine body and the brighter material as load rises. Then compare Balanced and Exhaust at a similar volume. A more exposed exhaust perspective can be entertaining for a demonstration; the cabin-focused mix may suit a different listening preference. There is no single setting that will match every speaker system.
Change Character or Pops one at a time. Raising all controls can make a comparison louder without making the relationship between engine speed and load more convincing.

The useful moments are acceleration, shift and release
During the stationary demo, listen across a complete cycle. Does the engine rise smoothly? Does an upshift include a short reduction in effort and a move to the next virtual RPM? Does the return toward a lower-load sound feel connected, rather than a completely unrelated recording?
Overrun crackles are events associated with conditions such as load release and particular shifts. They are not supposed to run as a constant metronome during a stable cruise. If the goal is realism, consider the timing as well as the loudness.
These are ways to evaluate the simulation, not a promise that every transition will match an unmodified M4 in a particular gear. Real vehicles vary with drive mode, exhaust specification, load and recording position; the app adds its own modeling choices.
Why the same speed can produce different engine notes
Road speed does not uniquely determine engine RPM when multiple virtual gears are available. In the current model, reaching 30km/h from a stop can leave a different gear selected from slowing down to 30km/h after a faster section. The resulting soundtrack can therefore differ even though the speed display looks the same.
GPS Drive also estimates load from changes in speed. It does not know exactly when you move your foot or how much power is required on a hill. This distinction helps set expectations: motion-linked sound is possible, but direct pedal response is not what this browser setup measures.
For a fair evaluation, compare similar acceleration histories and check that locations are updating. A stale GPS stream is an input problem, not a reason to retune the sound profile.
Check compatibility before expanding the catalog
Once the stationary session sounds right, use the Model Y setup guide to check GPS and media behavior on your own device. Have a passenger handle any screen observation during a motion check, and keep vehicle warnings audible.
Premium is an optional catalog expansion to 27 current profiles, priced at US$4.99 monthly or US$39.99 yearly (beta-only discounted price) as of this guide’s publication. It does not change the M4’s free status or provide an alternative GPS signal. The best reason to upgrade is that you already enjoy the working app and want the other sounds.
If the M4 is the profile you prefer, keep using it. A focused listening session with one well-understood sound is more useful than jumping between many profiles before checking the basic playback chain.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is the BMW M4 profile included for free?
Yes. It is one of the three current free profiles and does not require a Premium subscription.
Is this the actual sound of my Tesla’s motor?
No. It is a separate virtual combustion-engine soundtrack played through the browser’s media output.
Does this change or tune the car?
No vehicle coding, motor tuning, CAN connection or exhaust installation is performed by Drive Tone.
Can I select M4 automatically through this article’s link?
Open the app and choose BMW M4 in Vehicle & sound settings. This article does not override your saved profile or sound settings.
