A Tesla engine sound app, explained without the hype.
What plays through your speakers, how GPS changes the sound, and what to check before you subscribe.
A browser engine sound app plays simulated engine audio through your device’s media output. Drive Tone uses GPS speed to drive virtual RPM and gears. It does not read your accelerator pedal or control Tesla’s exterior speaker.
What actually changes when you open the app
Your car remains an electric vehicle. The change is the soundtrack: recordings are blended according to a virtual engine model, rather than playing one fixed engine clip. In Drive Tone, the dashboard shows simulated RPM, a virtual gear and GPS-derived speed so you can see what the sound is responding to.
There is no exhaust installation, vehicle coding or OBD connection in this setup. You open drivetone.online in a browser and press Start Engine to begin audio. GPS Drive is the initial mode; selecting it does not automatically start the sound. For an initial listen while parked, Test Mode lets you compare profiles without relying on location reception.
GPS is the input, not the accelerator pedal
Drive Tone receives the location and, when available, speed reported by the browser. It can also estimate speed from changing positions. That speed feeds virtual gear ratios and RPM; changes in speed help estimate engine load.
This explains both the appeal and the limitation. The pitch can follow a drive, but the app cannot know that you pressed the accelerator before the vehicle starts gaining speed. It also cannot distinguish every uphill, downhill or traction event from GPS alone. Think of the display as an audio instrument, not a second factory instrument cluster.
When reception is delayed, the soundtrack can lag. If location updates stop, the app eventually disengages speed linking and returns toward idle. A fresh permission grant cannot manufacture new positions if the vehicle browser is not providing them.
Try the three free engine profiles No Premium subscription required for the three free profiles.
Try a sound before choosing a plan
Three current profiles are free: BMW M4, Ferrari 458 Italia and Audi R8 V10 Plus. They provide contrasting six-, eight- and ten-cylinder sound references. The full catalog contains 27 profiles; Premium unlocks the other 24.
As of November 4, 2026, Premium is US$4.99 per month or US$39.99 per year (beta-only discounted price), billed on a recurring basis. You sign in with an email code to manage a subscription. Try the free profiles on the device you plan to use first. A sound you enjoy on laptop headphones can feel quite different through the vehicle’s speakers.
Check the current price, renewal and cancellation details on the service page before purchase. Canceling renewal retains the confirmed remaining paid period. Payments are non-refundable except where applicable law requires otherwise.
A useful first session takes a few deliberate checks
- While parked, open the app and keep media volume low.
- Select a free profile, press Start Engine and listen in Test Mode.
- Compare Cockpit, Balanced and Exhaust listening positions at similar volume.
- For GPS Drive, allow location access and check that the displayed speed receives new updates.
- If you later assess motion response, arrange screen interaction and recording through a passenger.
Compatibility depends on the device, browser, connection and vehicle software. The app was developed around an owner’s 2026 Model Y, but that is not a certification for every Tesla. If the vehicle browser is unsuitable, a phone browser with Bluetooth media is another configuration to evaluate.
Choose the experience you actually want
If your goal is an interior soundtrack with no extra hardware, a browser app is a useful starting point. If your goal is sound outside the vehicle, or a system driven by vehicle telemetry rather than GPS, you are comparing different products. Read the browser-versus-hardware guide before buying equipment.
Drive Tone is independent of Tesla and the manufacturers named in the sound profiles. Those names describe sound references, not sponsorship or an exact recreation of factory acoustics. The best next step is a real listen to the free catalog, followed by a compatibility check on your own device.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install an app on my Tesla?
Drive Tone opens as a website. It does not install vehicle software, require an OBD adapter or pair with the Tesla account. Browser and audio support still need to work on your device.
Does it make sound outside the car?
Drive Tone does not control the exterior pedestrian-warning speaker. It plays through the media output of the browser device, such as cabin speakers or phone audio routed over Bluetooth.
Is every engine sound free?
BMW M4, Ferrari 458 Italia and Audi R8 V10 Plus are free. The other 24 current profiles require an active Premium subscription.
Does the RPM show my Tesla’s actual motor RPM?
No. RPM and gears are simulated for the engine soundtrack. The GPS speed display is also not a replacement for the factory speedometer.
