Setup / GUIDE 02
Set up engine sounds in your Model Y.
A parked-first setup with clear checks for audio, GPS, sound settings and your next session.
Open drivetone.online while parked, choose a free sound profile and press Start Engine. Test audio first, then allow location for GPS Drive. Verify fresh speed updates before relying on motion-linked sound.
Start with audio, not GPS
The most useful first check is whether your browser can play the app’s audio at all. Open Drive Tone with an internet connection while the Model Y is parked. Set media volume low, select one of the three free profiles and press Start Engine. Sound begins only after that button press.
GPS Drive is selected initially. Switch to Test Mode for the first listen; its controls are intended for stationary testing. If you hear the engine there, you have separated basic playback from location reception. If you do not, check the media output and volume, reload once and press Start Engine again.
The app relies on browser audio features and location services. Vehicle software can affect either one, so a successful test on a laptop does not prove the same behavior in the vehicle.
Choose a sound and a listening position
Open Vehicle & sound settings. BMW M4, Ferrari 458 Italia and Audi R8 V10 Plus are free choices. The selection also shows vehicle information and an image, making it easier to confirm the profile you intended to test.
Begin with Cockpit listening position. Compare Balanced or Exhaust afterward rather than raising every setting at once. Volume changes perceived bass and detail, so keep the level similar between comparisons. Character and Pops & overrun crackle are separate controls: a louder overrun setting is not a substitute for clear engine audio.
The initial defaults include Sport, Auto and Cockpit, but saved browser preferences can replace those defaults. Record what you changed if you want to make a fair second comparison. M4 has its own established sound tuning; the profile names do not promise identical behavior across all vehicles.
Open Drive Tone for a parked setup No Premium subscription required for the three free profiles.
Enable and verify location reception
Select GPS Drive and allow location for the secure drivetone.online website when the browser asks. Check System status for recent location reception and a speed source. Receiving one position does not prove that the browser will continue updating it.
While parked, a speed of zero is expected. To evaluate motion response later, a passenger should observe whether the displayed GPS speed changes and whether the last-received age remains fresh. Avoid diagnosing it by revving the audio louder: more volume cannot fix missing positions.
When the browser supplies usable speed, the app uses it. If that speed is unavailable or stuck at zero but the positions change, the app can calculate speed after accumulating new fixes. The fallback may take several updates, especially when the browser sends them seconds apart.
What to check when the sound does not follow motion
| What you see | Check next |
|---|---|
| Engine stopped | Press Start Engine after checking volume. |
| Audio works in Test Mode; GPS speed is unavailable | Check location permission and the age of the last position. |
| New positions arrive, but speed stays zero | Check the speed source and allow the fallback to collect multiple fixes. |
| Speed updates stop after leaving the page | Return to the app and check reception; browser background behavior varies. |
The GPS diagnostic guide explains what the counters mean. Do not reset all browser data as a first step: that also removes local preferences and can sign you out.
Keep a simple record of your configuration
For a useful compatibility note, record the model year, vehicle software, browser device, whether Test Mode produces sound and whether GPS speed updates. “Does not work” combines too many possible issues; “audio works, but there are no fresh position callbacks” is actionable.
If you use a phone browser instead, route its media to the vehicle over Bluetooth and test the complete path while parked. The phone becomes the location source and audio device; this is not remote control of the car browser. Bluetooth latency, calls and other media can affect the experience.
Keep warning sounds audible and configure the screen while parked. Drive Tone is an independent audio simulation with virtual RPM and gears, not a vehicle diagnostic or control system.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Will this work on every Model Y software version?
Compatibility is not guaranteed for every browser or vehicle software version. Try the free audio and GPS checks on your exact setup before subscribing.
Why is GPS Drive selected but the engine silent?
Mode selection and engine start are separate. Press Start Engine to begin playback, then check media volume and the selected output.
Are settings synchronized between my phone and my Tesla?
Current sound preferences are stored in each browser. Signing into the same account does not automatically transfer local sound settings between devices.
Do I need Premium Connectivity?
Drive Tone needs internet access, but this guide does not promise a particular Tesla connectivity entitlement. Check that your browser can load the site over your available connection.
